Asbestos in our environment -
understanding the risks.
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used in over 3000 different materials in the UK. Although it was banned in 2000, it is still present in an estimated 1.5 million buildings in the UK.
Inhalation of asbestos dust is the single biggest cause of occupational deaths with an estimated 4000 people dying every year due to past exposure.
Asbestos, when sealed and in good condition, is generally safe with minimal risks to occupants. However disturbing asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) can release the dust that causes a number of ill-health conditions.
These include asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. In the event of asbestos being damaged or if it is present in an area that is to be refurbished or demolished, removal or encapsulation may often the only option. In this event, call Axiom Asbestos Division for a safe and reliable remediation service.
